As I sped (no, officer, I couldn't possibly have been going that fast) down the waterfront highway toward school earlier this afternoon, my cell phone buzzed in my pocket. I didn't reach it in time.
The missed call was from an area code in the suburbs. At first I figured it must be a wrong number, but then I recalled that my cell phone still has the California area code. Nobody from around here would be calling me by accident. Who did I know with a local suburban area code?
Wait. There was one person.
My write-on editor.
But I was running late already. And then I was late to class. And then I was in class, and couldn't check voicemail. And then my phone buzzed again. Same number.
My write-on editor and I had communicated entirely by email thus far. A phone call must mean something significant. Or must it? Maybe he was just calling all the write-on candidates, for some reason. But what reason, and why now, when the decision was due tomorrow? Brain spin. Brain spin. Must. Focus. On. First. Amendment.
First Amendment is two and a half hours long on Wednesdays. Thankfully, there's a ten minute break in the middle. I ducked out into the hallway, fussed with my cell phone, retrieved the voicemail...
...heard the words good news...
...heard the word accepted...
...and heard nothing else.
Except for an odd ringing in my ears that sounds uncannily like the Ride of the Valkyries.
I love it when a plan comes together.
yay! congrats!

Posted by: Will Baude at February 2, 2005 06:15 PMAs you know, I am a tranfer student too. I received my call during last summer when I was employed as a clerk for a law firm. I was returning to the office after getting subpoenas issued and subsequently delivering them. I answered my cell phone and received the good news. To say the least, I experienced an emotional high for the rest of the day. Since I wrote on as a 2L, I participated in the normal 2L writing contest. (Our GPAs and writing scores were added together in order to decide who was invited to join). I can't imagine writing a whole comment in order to get in! Your emotional high must be higher than mine was. Congratulations!!
